    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make apple crisp from scratch?

This recipe for gluten free cranberry apple crisp is so easy! First core your apples, peel them and cut them into bite size chunks. In a medium size bowl add the apple chunks, fresh cranberries, brown sugar, granulated sugar and lemon juice. Stir the ingredients together and let sit while you mix up the crisp topping.

In the bowl of your stand mixer pour the gluten free rolled oats, brown sugar, brown rice flour, sea salt, melted butter and pecans. Blend until crumble forms, about 1-2 minutes.

Pour the apple mixture into a greased 9x13 baking dish. Top the apple mixture with the crumble.

Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. The crumble will be browned and the apple mixture will be bubbling when done.

What is the difference between a crumble and a crisp?

The biggest difference is that a crisp contains oats and a crumble does not. Both a crumble and crisp are a topping that goes over a fruit mixture and is baked until bubbling and browned.

A crisp gets its name because the oats in the topping will be come crispy when baked. A crumble is usually made with a flour base and will not be crispy.

What are the best apples to use in this gluten free cranberry apple crisp?

I like to use a combination of sweet and tart apples for my gluten free cranberry apple crisp. The sweet apples will break down more when baked, while the tart apples will hold there shape better. This combination gives a delicious sweet and tart combination to the fruit mixture.

My two favorite sweet apples are Fuji or Honey Crisp. My go to for tart apples is Granny Smith. There are many other variations of apples, but I find these three types easiest to get at my rural grocery stores.

You can easily add other ingredients to this gluten free chex mix. It would be delicious with chocolate candies, chocolate chips, coconut flakes or a little bit of cayenne pepper added to the spices for a bit of a kick!

    Notes

The Costco Skinless, Boneless Turkey Breasts are my favorite. This turkey breast is delicious served with cranberry sauce and green beans. I roast frozen green beans in the air fryer at 380 degrees fo 9 minutes while the turkey breast is resting on the cutting board.

However, the turkey breast at Costco isn't available year round. I buy turkey tenderloin at the grocery store. They are usually 1.5 pounds, so I cook 2-3 of the tenderloins for dinner. You will need to use the lower cooking times shown above for these smaller turkey tenderloins.

If you don't have an air fryer yet, you need to get one. I was super resistant to getting another kitchen appliance, but I use my air fryer all of the time. Literally, at least four nights a week.

Whether I'm making meats or cooking frozen vegetables (in 9 minutes!!) my air fryer has found a permanent home on my countertop. I have used mine so much that I will be looking for another on Black Friday.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can you air fry turkey?

Yes! I love to air fry the boneless turkey breasts from Costco. I'm sure you can get boneless turkey breasts anywhere, but Costco is the best price I've found. I rub the turkey breast with butter and then pour half the brine over it. I air fry one side and then do the same for the other. It is delicious!

How do you air fry turkey?

I take the boneless turkey breast out of the packaging and pat dry with a paper towel. I place the turkey breast into the air fryer basket. Then I rub the turkey breast with softened butter and pour half of my glaze over top.

I air fry the turkey breast and then take out of the air fryer immediately. Let stand on your cutting board for 10 to 15 minutes before cutting so the juices can settle. This is my new favorite way to enjoy turkey breast!

How long should I air fry a turkey?

Ultimately you need to make sure the center or largest part of the turkey reaches 165 degrees. Ensuring that your turkey is fully cooked is the most important part. For a three pound boneless, skinless turkey breast I cooked one side for 20 minutes at 350 degrees and then flipped to cook the other side for 15 minutes more. I used a digital meat thermometer to make sure the turkey had reached 165 degrees in the center of the meatiest part.

If I've purchased a smaller turkey breast or turkey tenderloin I lesson the cooking time by 5-7 minutes and check the temperature to make sure it is 165 or above in the thickest part of the meat. Turkey tenderloins are usually available year round at my grocery store.
