Apple season on the farm means it's time for this gluten free apple crisp, a dessert I have been making for years. I like to mix sweet and tart apples for the best flavor, then top it all with a buttery oat crumble that bakes up golden and crisp.

This recipe is easy to make ahead and simply reheat, so it is perfect for busy fall days. It tastes just as good the second day, sometimes even better once the flavors have settled.
Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or add a drizzle of caramel sauce for something extra special.

Best Apples for Apple Crisp
A mix of sweet and tart apples gives this apple crisp the best flavor. Try pairing a sweeter variety like Honeycrisp or Fuji with a tart one like Granny Smith. Firmer apples hold their shape better during baking, so they are worth using over softer varieties.
Tips for a Crisp, Not Soggy Topping
For the crispiest topping, make sure your butter is cold when it goes into the crumble mixture, this helps it hold together in small clumps instead of melting flat. Bake until the topping is deeply golden and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges, that bubbling is a sign the arrowroot powder has fully thickened the juices.
How to Store and Reheat
Store leftover apple crisp covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat individual servings in the microwave, or warm the whole dish in a 350 degree oven for about 15 minutes to bring the topping back to life.
To freeze, let the crisp cool completely, then freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
A Note on Gluten Free Oats
Oats are naturally gluten free, but they are often processed in facilities that also handle wheat. Make sure to use oats labeled certified gluten free to keep this recipe safe for gluten free diets.
Top Tip
Slice your apples to a consistent thickness so they all cook through at the same rate. Uneven slices can leave you with some apples mushy and others still firm once the topping is done baking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. You will just need to make sure that the oats you are using are certified gluten free. Regular rolled oats or oatmeal is typically processed along with wheat flour and can be contaminated with gluten. There will be a seal of certification on anything that is gluten free.
The biggest difference is that a crisp contains oats and a crumble does not. Both a crumble and crisp are a topping that goes over a fruit mixture and is baked until bubbling and browned.
A crisp gets its name because the oats in the topping will become crispy when baked. A crumble is usually made with a flour base and will not be crispy or crunchy.
Yes! This is a very simple recipe to make. I make it frequently because it's easy to put together and to have a dessert in a hurry. You could even make it the day before you need it.
