This homemade pumpkin butter is thick, spiced, and comes together on the stovetop in just 10 minutes. All you need is pumpkin puree, brown sugar, honey, lemon juice, pumpkin pie spice, and a pinch of sea salt to make a creamy fall spread that tastes like it took all day.

It is the kind of recipe you will want to keep a jar of in the fridge all season long.

I love making a batch of this on a cool fall morning while the smell of pumpkin spice fills the kitchen.

It comes together in one saucepan with no canning or special equipment required, and it thickens up beautifully in just a few minutes on the stove.

Once it cools, it is ready to spread on toast, swirl into oatmeal, or stir into your morning coffee for an easy homemade pumpkin spice latte.

    What Is Pumpkin Butter

Despite the name, pumpkin butter does not contain any actual butter. It is a thick, spiced pumpkin spread made by simmering pumpkin puree down with sugar and spice until it thickens into something you can spoon straight onto toast. Think of it as a cross between pumpkin pie filling and apple butter, minus the dairy.

    Ways To Use Pumpkin Butter

This spread is good on more than toast. A few of my favorite ways to use it:

    • Stir a spoonful into your morning coffee for an easy pumpkin spice latte
    • Swirl it into oatmeal or yogurt
    • Spread it on biscuits, waffles, or pancakes
    • Use it as a topping for ice cream

    Tips For Making Pumpkin Butter

This mixture thickens fast, so give it a stir every minute or so once it starts to change color, so it does not scorch on the bottom of the pan.

    Storage

After the pumpkin butter has cooled to room temperature store it in an air tight container in the refrigerator for 7-10 days.

I like this glass latch storage jar, this Ball stack and store jar and these Ball crystal jelly jars.

    Top Tip

This pumpkin butter is delicious on toast or a bagel. It is also amazing to add a dollop of this pumpkin butter to your morning cup of coffee to make a pumpkin spice latte.

Hi Laura. I don't have any knowledge about canning so I can't speak to whether or not this could be canned. Sorry I'm not a help with that. ~Elaine

Thank you for this! We only got one jar of TJ’s version this year before they sold out! This hit the spot! The only thing we will do different next time is cut the lemon juice in half as it was a tad bit tart but absolutely edible! Thanks again!
