These Gluten Free Baked Beans with Ground Beef are the easiest one pot side dish you can bring to a summer cookout or potluck. Ground beef and onion are browned right in a Dutch oven, then canned baked beans, gluten free Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar are stirred in and baked until hot and bubbling.

The whole recipe comes together in one pot with almost no cleanup, and it tastes like it simmered on the stove all day.

The gluten free Worcestershire sauce is the detail that makes this recipe safe for anyone eating gluten free, since regular Worcestershire sauce often contains gluten.

I use vegetarian baked beans for this recipe since they do not contain cured bacon, which is a personal preference of mine, but any 28 ounce can of baked beans works beautifully here.

Whether you are headed to a cookout, a potluck, or just want a hearty side dish for dinner, this gluten free baked beans recipe is ready in about 45 minutes from start to finish.

    Notes

I used vegetarian baked beans because they don't have cured bacon in them. That is a personal dietary choice I make. You can use whatever 28 ounce baked bean you would like for this recipe.

    Storage

Store leftover baked beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Reheat on the stovetop over medium low heat, stirring occasionally, or in the microwave in 30 second intervals until warmed through.

This recipe also freezes well. Transfer cooled beans to a freezer safe container and freeze for up to three months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

    Top Tip

Use gluten free Worcestershire sauce and double check the label on your canned baked beans before starting. Regular Worcestershire sauce often contains gluten, and some baked bean brands may include ingredients that are not gluten free. Confirming both ahead of time means you can put this dish together with confidence and focus on the cooking.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different protein instead of ground beef?

Yes. Ground turkey or Italian sausage both work well in this recipe. Brown the protein the same way and proceed with the rest of the recipe as written.

Do I have to use a Dutch oven for this recipe?

A Dutch oven is ideal because you can brown the beef and bake the beans in the same pot, but any oven safe pot with a lid will work. If your pot does not have a lid, cover it tightly with foil before baking.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Yes. Brown the ground beef and onion ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. When you are ready to bake, combine the cooked beef with the remaining ingredients in your Dutch oven and bake as directed. This is a great way to save time on the day of a cookout or potluck.

    Choosing Your Baked Beans

Any 28 ounce can of baked beans works for this recipe, so use whatever your family prefers. I use vegetarian baked beans since they do not contain cured bacon, which is a personal choice.

If you prefer a smokier flavor, look for a brand labeled brown sugar or hickory style. Always check the label to confirm the baked beans you choose are gluten free, since some brands may use ingredients that contain gluten.

    Choosing Your Ground Beef

I recommend 80/20 ground beef for this recipe. The extra fat keeps the beef tender and adds flavor to the dish as it cooks. If you use a leaner ground beef like 90/10, the beans will still taste great but may be slightly less rich.

There is no need to drain the beef before adding the beans since the fat helps flavor the sauce as everything bakes together.

    Serving Suggestions

These baked beans are a classic side dish for so many occasions.

    • At a summer cookout. Serve alongside burgers, hot dogs, or grilled chicken for a complete backyard meal.
    • At a potluck or BBQ. This recipe feeds a crowd and travels well in the Dutch oven you baked it in.
    • As a main dish. Since this recipe already includes ground beef, it is hearty enough to serve as a main course with a side of cornbread or a simple salad.
    • For Fourth of July. This is one of the easiest make ahead sides for a holiday cookout and pairs perfectly with your other gluten free BBQ recipes.
